State-Aware Resource Allocation for Wireless Closed-Loop Control Systems

Wireless closed-loop control is of major significance for future industrial manufacturing. However, applications pose stringent quality service requirements reliable operation. Contrary to traditional ultra-reliable low-latency communications design goals such as low packet loss rates and latency, research results in the domain networked systems (NCS) state that depending on sampling period, inherently tolerate a few consecutive losses. This translates into better-suited metric capture application therefore more conclusive goal wireless networks: ensuring maximum age information (AoI). With Markov modeling approach, we propose exploit tolerance through novel dynamic multi-connectivity scheme term state-aware resource allocation (SARA), which temporally negatively correlates losses, thus avoiding long sequences. Through statistical multiplexing, SARA enables mean time failure (MTTF) order years while keeping per-agent average channel usage close one, also multi-agent setting with competition resources. Compared static dual-connectivity, MTTF can be increased 100-fold whereas number required channels reduces by 40%. Our approach statistically guarantees system-wide AoI distributions, aid ensure performance.
